Harris Co. deputy, suspect hurt in shootout
04:53 PM CDT on Thursday, May 22, 2008
HOUSTON – A restaurant robbery in northeast Harris County has left a Harris County Sheriff’s deputy and a robbery suspect hurt.
It happened at a Taqueria Arandas located at 364 Uvalde at 6:45 Thursday morning.
Investigators say that Sammy Jones, 38, had just robbed the restaurant and was leaving with cash when Harris County Deputy Don McCall arrived.
That's when, officials say, McCall and Jones, who was armed, got into a shoot-out.
Jones was shot several times in the chest. Still, he managed to go to an apartment complex across the street from the restaurant where he was arrested.
Deputy McCall, who was shot in the leg, lay in the restaurant parking lot.
A second deputy who arrived helped stop the bleeding by using a blood clotting packet on the leg.
McCall is being treated at Memorial Hermann Hospital. He is expected to be released Thursday night.
Jones is in serious condition at Ben Taub.
Investigators say they recovered Jones' weapon, wallet and a large sum of money.
They said that he could be linked to other robberies in the area and that he is wanted for murder in Louisiana.
