HOUSTON -- The Texas Education Agency is giving the troubled North Forest school district a year to right its educational ship, or risk having the district shut down.
The north Houston school district has been rocked by low test scores, financial woes and scandal. In a letter from the state agency that oversees education, school board members were told the district has yet to show improvement.
The district is 13 million in debt and five of its schools were rated by the state as “academically unacceptable.”
If the letter was a report card, North Forest ISD would have gotten a D. However, the district is getting another school year to show improvement and has been placed on probation.
Still, parents are tiring of the district's woes.
“He's a smart kid, (but) he's not coming home with any work to do after school of anything like that,” said parent Clifford Lewis. “I'm just going to take him out (of school).”
Other parents are hopeful something will be done.
“I'm glad someone's coming in so that someone can possibly save the district,” said parent Raymond Geegan Jr. Still, he plans not to let his kids return to the district.
He may not be the last. The TEA is requiring that all North Forest ISD parents be notified about the probationary status by the end of the month.
