Wild chase suspect out on bond
Suspect arrested in north Houston neighborhood04:14 PM CDT on Monday, August 18, 2008
HOUSTON -- The suspect in last week's hour-long police chase is out on bond.
The suspect, Freddie Lee Scott, was driving a pick-up truck and after leading the police in a chase, he tried to make a run for it. A deputy's patrol car stopped him and he was arrested.
Today he saw a judge who released him on a $30,000 bond and ordered him to stand trial on numerous charges including tampering with evidence for throwing drugs out of his car and attempted murder for swerving towards deputies trying to lay out spike strips.
The chase started around 1:00 p.m. on Thursday when police tried to stop the suspect on drug charges. They said Scott is a known drug dealer who had been under surveillance in the Greenspoint area.
Scott took off and headed north on I-45 with HPD patrol cars following behind.
The suspect eventually exited the freeway and headed back south, then north again.
During the chase, Scott sped through several north Houston neighborhoods and strip centers. He opened his door in one parking lot, but closed it again and kept going.
He also drove the wrong way on at least one street.
Deputies from the Harris County Sheriff's Office later joined the chase when the driver headed into northwest Harris County.
Police tried to block the truck with their patrol cars and spikes several times, but he managed to elude them.
They finally threw a spike in front of the truck a few minutes before the chase ended, causing at least one of the truck's tires to blow out.
That's when he pulled over.
They said they continued the chase because the suspect tried to swerve toward deputies at least twice.
The suspect was knocked to the ground when the deputy's vehicle accidentally hit him after he jumped from his truck. He suspect wasn't seriously hurt. In fact, he kept fighting until several Houston police officers and sheriff's deputies managed to subdue him.
One officer appeared to pull out a Taser, but it's not clear if he used it on the suspect.
Scott was then handcuffed and hauled away to jail.
The wild high-speed chase ended in a front yard in the 6900 block of Deer Ridge in northwest Houston.
"Pretty scary," said neighbor Harry Krusleski. "Could've been my yard, could've been some kid riding a bicycle or something. That's the dangerous part."
Rodney Pinnell was glad to see the suspect in custody. He said the truck nearly hit his vehicle head-on during the chase.
"This is bologna. Cop pulls somebody over, puts the lights on, you pull on over," Pinnell said. "That's the way I see it."
Freddie Lee Scott was charged with felony evading arrest and at least two counts of attempted assault of a police officer. He was released on bond on August 18.
