Houston crime fighter loses son to gunfire
05:34 PM CDT on Wednesday, August 27, 2008
HOUSTON – Former Houston minister Charles X. White has made it his life’s mission to help fight crime, but his own son, Jairus Elon, became a victim of a deadly shooting this weekend.
Police say that Jairus Elon stopped at Tasso’s nightclub as it was closing when he was shot.
Police say Reynaldo Draper pulled the trigger. Draper began shooting, police say, because he was upset that someone had insulted his girlfriend.
Jairus Elon was in the line of fire.
Witnesses told police that Draper stood over Jarius Elon and kept shooting.
The 21-year-old victim was a student at HCC.
He was working part-time as a security guard.
“He got it. He understood he had to go to work. He understood he had to go to school,” said Jairus Elon’s father Charles.
Instead of helping his son plan his future, Charles X. White, a minister and longtime crime fighter, is now planning his son’s funeral.
The viewing for Jairus Elon White will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Pentecostal Baptist Church at 8310 Southview.
His funeral will follow at 10 a.m.
Jairus Elon White will be buried at the Paradise South Cemetery.
