Saved by the cell: GPS feature helps officials find man in woods
11:07 AM CDT on Thursday, July 10, 2008
SPRING, Texas -- A cell phone saved a local man who was lost in the woods in Montgomery County Wednesday night.
The Spring Fire Department got a call around 11:30 from the sheriff's office saying there was an injured man wandering around in thick woods somewhere between the San Jacinto River and Spring Creek.
Apparently the man had entered the trails and woods off Sorters Road in his Jeep earlier in the evening.
Some time later, he got the vehicle stuck in a hole and became disoriented.
Officials said he called his wife for help and kept walking, somehow crossing the river and covering as many as 3 miles.
His wife called authorities.
The fire department was able to use GPS tracking from the man’s cell phone to locate him.
It took about half an hour.
One firefighter was overcome with heat exhaustion during the search and was treated at the scene.
The man was also treated, but they were unable to find his Jeep.
