HOUSTON—Houstonians waited in line for hours Friday to get emergency food stamps after Hurricane Ike.
At the Texas Health & Human Services Food Stamp Office on Telephone Road, hundreds of people were turned away Thursday after the stamps ran out.
Officials only issue 700 stamps per day.
According to the Center for Public Policy Priorities, families can qualify for the emergency stamps if they live in one of the 29 counties declared a disaster, have less than $5,000 in liquid resources and have a monthly income below certain benchmarks.
For a household of one person, that income cannot exceed $1,430. For two people, it cannot be over $1,925. For three people, the income cannot exceed $2,420, and for four people the cutoff is $2,915.
For each additional person in the household, add $495 to the income limit.
Those applying for the stamps will need to provide ID and proof of residence in the affected counties.
