Klein ISD: Student hacked into district's computer system
07:29 PM CST on Thursday, December 4, 2008
HOUSTON—A student in Klein ISD allegedly did more than just his homework with his school-issued laptop.
The district on Thursday said they believe a student at Klein Oak High School used one of their laptops to hack into the computer system and access nearly 5,000 employee records.
Every student at Klein Oak was issued a computer as part of a new laptop program, but some were surprised by the allegations.
“I just found out today. It shocked me,” Klein Oak student Adryion Lindsay said.
“Wonder who he is. They kept it on the low,” Klein Oak student Selvin Pheuada said.
The district would not identify the accused student, but they said the breach had compromised sensitive employee information.
They believe names, birthdays, Social Security numbers, insurance information and personal phone numbers were exposed.

A district spokesperson said they had been so focused on creating filters in the system to prevent kids from visiting certain Web sites that they didn’t look at the department folders, which were easier to access.
In a statement to 11 News, the district said they had no reason to believe the personal information was distributed, and that the matter has been handed over to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
“The individual involved has been charged with the felony of fraudulent use or possession of identifying information,” the statement read.
“Immediately upon learning of the incident, Klein ISD hired an outside forensic company to assist in the investigation. Upon completion of the investigation, Klein ISD has no reason to believe, at this time, that there was anyone involved other than the one individual who has been charged.”
The district said it believed all of the information that was obtained has since been recovered.
“These computers are supposed to be really, really secure, and people are finding out ways of getting into them all the time. Break through codes and everything, how to get on MySpace and put games on,” Lindsey said.
There are a lot of smart kids going to Klein ISD schools. Maybe one of them was a little too smart.
