Big Brothers, Big Sisters said it had a 300-percent increase in men interested in becoming mentors in the fourth quarter last year.

A call to service has been a central theme in Obama’s campaign.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters said in November alone, they matched more mentors with boys and girls than in the entire third quarter.

The agency said they hope Obama’s message will keep the upward trend going.

Sean Golden, a top gymnast who volunteers as a Big Brother, knows the benefits of the program firsthand.

“It’s very rewarding to me, because I’m directly working with someone and I can see the result unfold, whether it’s in his grades or comments from his mom or other things like that,” Golden said.

“One of the great things about mentoring is it really provides a powerful answer to the question that so many of us are asking, which is, ‘How can I be part of the solution? What can I do?’ and being a Big Brother or Big Sister is a marvelous response,” Marian Davenport of Big Brothers, Big Sisters said.

Despite all the help, the agency said there is still a big need.

There are more than 700 children in the Houston area who need to be matched with a mentor.
