Man shot in leg during botched holdup in Kroger parking lot
08:27 AM CDT on Monday, June 29, 2009
HOUSTON -- A trip to Kroger ended with one man in the hospital and another in police custody Sunday night.
Police said three men -- aged 19, 24 and 32 -- went to the Kroger at FM 1960 and Cypress Station around 9 p.m. to pick up some party supplies for a young relative’s birthday.
As they walked through the parking lot, police said a fourth man jumped from between cars and held the victims at gunpoint, demanding money.
Police said one of the victims lunged at the suspect to try to get the gun, but during their struggle the firearm went off, striking the victim in the leg.
The other two men then tackled the suspect and held him until police arrived.
“My brother knows a little boxing moves, so he held him down pretty good,” said Jose Torres.
Police said the injured victim was taken to Ben Taub in stable condition.
The suspect was kept in the back of a patrol car in the parking lot while officers gathered evidence.
“Its a good thing they got him; another bad guy off the streets,” said Torres. “I’m kind of happy but sad since my brother-in-law got shot; but he’s arrested [and] I’m pretty happy.”
