Voluntary water rationing in League City

07:04 AM CDT on Tuesday, June 30, 2009

From Daily News staff reports

LEAGUE CITY , Texas— League City on Monday joined a growing list of Galveston County cities urging residents to conserve water.

A statewide drought has prompted officials in League City, Galveston, Bayou Vista and La Marque to urge residents to ration water.

The conservation is voluntary, but city officials will call for mandatory rationing if the drought continues.

League City on Monday urged its residents to conserve water by irrigating their lawns between 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. and watering on a schedule.

The city recommends residents with addresses ending in even numbers water only on even-numbered dates.

Those with addresses ending in odd numbers should water only on odd-numbered dates.

League City also recommends that residents:

• Use a hose connection that does not allow water to flow continuously when watering a vehicle;

• Conserve water as much as possible on the weekends, especially Sunday, which is the highest pump day for League City;

• Keep grass 3 inches tall during the summer and don’t cut more than one-third of its length at one time. Taller grass holds moisture better;

• Leave lawn clippings on the lawn instead of bagging them;

• Never water on windy days;

• Use drip irrigation for bedded plants trees, and shrubs;

• Give grass 1 inch of water per week. To determine how long to run sprinklers, place straight-edged cans at different distances away from the sprinkler and time how long it takes to fill an average of 1 inch of water in each can;

• Cover pools and spas; and

• Report water leaks immediately to 281-554-1390.

For information, call the Water Production Department at 281-554-1041.
