Baytown cops search for serial taggers
09:12 AM CDT on Thursday, July 2, 2009
BAYTOWN, Texas -- Baytown police say a suspect or group of suspects is on a graffiti spree in their town.
For the past two weeks, police say the taggers have hit a number of businesses in the area.
Last Sunday, about 19 businesses were hit, and police said it was even worse the day before.
They’re checking surveillance video to see if they can identify any suspects.
Once the arrests are made, the vandals will be charged with a felony.
“When you compare it to a stabbing or homicide, it’s far down the chain. But the fact of the matter is, is that the public perception of what graffiti presents is unacceptable. People don’t want to live around it,” Baytown Capt. David Alford said.
Police said there is a common denominator among most of the graffiti: the word “cali.”
They’re still trying to figure out what that means.
Police said the taggers have caused thousands of dollars in damage.
Gene Brewer owns one of the businesses that was hit by the vandals.
He said graffiti is a bigger problem than you might think.
“Not only does it look bad, but it’s a hassle. You gotta go and find someone to paint over it. You wonder then how long, maybe a month or two, it will happen again. So it’s just a big hassle,” Brewer said.
