Charges filed in death of Houston sailor
09:43 PM CDT on Thursday, July 23, 2009
SAN DIEGO -- A fellow sailor has been charged with murder in the shooting death of Houston Sailor August Provost III.
Johnathon C. Campos, 32, is charged with 16 crimes, including murder. The Navy says he also tried to solicit the murder of another sailor.
The sailor was arrested on July 1, but charges weren't filed until Thursday.
The Navy said Campos went on a crime spree in late May that included burglary and arson.
The full extent of Campos’ alleged behavior was not known to his superiors, but the suspect’s Commanding Officer had been notified of a DUI offense in Imperial Beach on June 20. The offense was scheduled for review the week of June 29, said Navy spokesperson Captain Matt Brown.
According to Brown, this review could have resulted in both administrative and punitive actions against Campos.
However, before the review took place, Campos allegedly set out to commit an act of material property damage against the command by setting fire to one of the Landing Craft Air Cushion on June 29, said Brown.
It was then that he ran into Provost at the sentry station and allegedly shot him multiple times.
"In an apparent effort to conceal evidence after Seaman Provost was shot, Campos allegedly took the sentry’s firearm, and then set fire to the guard shack,” said Brown.
Some family members believe Provost’s death was a hate crime because he was gay, but Navy investigators called Provost’s death a random act.
They said the suspect was implicated through physical evidence and his statement.
No other details have been released.
“It’s just so sad it had to happen this way. August was a kid that had dreams and a lot of ambitions," said Provost’s cousin Calvin Bates on the day of his funeral. "It’s sad the way his life was taken. I hope there’s justice,”
The Navy Region Southwest Public Affairs also contributed to this report.
