Homeowner shoots suspected bike thief
12:04 AM CDT on Saturday, October 17, 2009
HOUSTON—An alleged burglar is being treated in a Houston hospital after a homeowner took matters into his own hands and shot the man.
It happened at a home on James and Cochran in northeast Houston.
Police say someone had been stealing property in the neighborhood lately, so one resident put up a camera to try and catch the culprit on tape.
Overnight, that same homeowner said he heard a noise and spotted a man trying to steal bikes in front of his home.
“I aimed at his head. Then I aimed at his chest. And then I aimed at the bottom,” said the homeowner, who didn’t want to be identified. “I shot him. Obviously, I hit him in the leg just the way I wanted to. I just wanted to wing him so the police would find out who he was.”
The man said he wanted to protect his property and help put an end to a string of crimes in the neighborhood.
The resident told police he shot the man through a window.
The shooting was caught on tape. There is no word yet on if that tape will be released.
Police say the suspect lives nearby.
They didn't charge the homeowner but will refer the case to a grand jury.
11 News Legal Analyst Gerald Treece said the homeowner was within his rights under Texas law.
