Swine flu: Who is getting it, what's UH doing to protect students
05:22 PM CDT on Friday, October 23, 2009
HOUSTON—Federal health officials have released new numbers about the swine flu, and they’re not encouraging.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 1,000 people across the country have died from the H1N1 virus.
The CDC says one in every five American children had a flu-like illness this month so far.
In Texas, 21 children have died from swine flu, and 14 have died from the seasonal flu.
All of those children were under 18.
Officials at the University of Houston are taking precautions to protect students.
More students there are starting to show up to the university health clinic with flu-like symptoms, but so far there have been no cases of swine flu.
Health Center Director Floyd Robinson thinks that could change when flu season kicks into high gear.
“In December (and) in January, we anticipate that we’re going to see some pretty sick patients here, but the thing I’m trying to stress is that we see these same kinds of numbers on a yearly basis,” he said.
University officials are handing out bacterial spray to students. Students are also being encouraged to stay home if they don’t feel well.
Still students say as long as they take precautions, they’re not scared of H1N1.
