North Texans find ways to stay cool

Demarais' job as an ice sculptor means he escapes the heat

DALLAS - It can affect your swing - even your decision making in the big game.

There's no doubt about it, North Texas is feeling the heat.

And if you were outside during the hottest parts of the day, you know you were just trying to find ways to cope with the heat wave that's settled over the area.

On these hot days, some people seek sweet relief in the form of ice-cream.

But if you have the right connections, you can do one better.

An environment that is 22 degrees, surrounded by ice is not a bad way to beat the summer heat.

It's cool enough for the ice sculptors at American Ice to forget it's over 100 degrees outside.

"I enjoy a good game of golf myself in the heat, but I'd much rather sit in here if I have to pull 40 hours in," said Dean Demarais.

At the end of the day though, even the guy with arguably the coolest job in Dallas is snapped back to reality.

"Once you step outside you're reminded so quickly," said Demarais.

That at least for the next few months, the heat is not going anywhere.

How to stay cool:

The Fort Worth Parks and Community Services Department has announced that all City operated Community Centers will serve as shelters from the heat during normal business hours of operation.

As the temperature soars, it is important to stay out of the heat and indoors as much as possible. Spend time in an air conditioned space. Only two hours a day in an air conditioned space can significantly reduce the risk of a heat related illness.
