PLEASANT GROVE -- A family’s beautiful day in the yard in an instant turned tragic and disheartening. What could have been just a horrible accident became a crime involving a one-year-old toddler and a driver who hit the baby and then took off.
Witnesses tell us a woman was pulling away from the house when she rolled on top of the toddler in the grass. It all happened in front of several children, including 10-year-old Marina Alcala.
“She just went over him and he fell down. Then she went over and we screamed to go back, and she screamed, and then she went back and she just ran, just ran,” said Alcala.
Neighbors say the driver seemed to know that she hit the child in front of the home, but drove off anyway.
Witnesses say the driver was pulling away from a garage sale in Pleasant Grove and did not see the toddler in front of her in the yard. Neighbors say the truck rolled on top of the child and stopped for a few seconds.
People nearby screamed for the woman to pull forward, but when she realized what happened witnesses say she sped away, leaving the bleeding child on the ground.
“Man, I couldn’t even think. My mind was just gone. I was feeling for the mom, because the mom was just laying on top of him, just trying to talk to him and comfort him, and keep his eyes open,” said Darius Wiley, a witness to the scene.
Police are still looking for the driver. She was last seen in a 2000 silver Ford pick-up truck.
The child was taken to Baylor Hospital, where he later passed away.
