DALLAS - After a three-day stay in Dallas after fleeing Houston over the weekend, a 17-month-old boy was fatally hit by a car at about 3 p.m. Sunday at a Pleasant Grove gas station.

The incident happened as the Moreno family, who left Houston Friday to escape the threat of Hurricane Ike, was walking out of a restaurant located in a shopping center in the 7000 block of Military Parkway.

Family members said Manuel Moreno bolted into the parking lot in front of a white SUV that was pulling up to a gas pump. The driver of the SUV did not see the boy and ran over him with her vehicle, witnesses said.

"The daddy screamed for her to stop like three times," said Johanna Castro, a witness.

Sgt. Gil Cerda, with the Dallas Police Department, said the death appears to be an accident and there are no plans to press charges against the driver.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
