DALLAS COUNTY — The temperature approached triple-digits as firefighters battled the heat along with a stubborn blaze at a trash dump in rural Southeast Dallas County on Friday afternoon.

Used tires and tinder-dry vegetation were helping to fuel the flames, which were reported about 2:45 p.m. The fire sent a towering plume of thick, black smoke into the sky that could be seen from downtown Dallas.

The fire was at a dump near Tom Lee Drive and Bunche Street on the Seagoville border. Emergency crews reported multiple explosions at the site as the fire continued to burn after 90 minutes.

There was an unconfirmed report that at least one invalid was being evacuated from a residence within 100 yards of the fire.

Firefighters wearing protective gear tried to stay cool with frequent breaks, shade and cold drinks.

No injuries were reported.
