New plan to curb wrong-way drivers on tollway
06:48 PM CDT on Friday, October 30, 2009
DALLAS — The North Texas Tollway Authority is looking to make additional changes along Wycliff Avenue to prevent drivers from getting on the Dallas North Tollway headed in the wrong direction.
The agency wants to extend a cement barrier that would make it harder for cars heading east on Wycliff Avenue to turn into the off-ramp illegally.
The proposal is in response to eight wrong-way accidents along the tollway — three of which are believed to have started at the Wycliff exit.
In the latest accident on Thursday morning, police say 39-year-old Dick Eastin was intoxicated and traveling the wrong way on the tollway before his pickup truck bounced off a light pole and crashed into a concrete barrier.
Eastin was injured, but his truck did not hit any other vehicles.
Dallas city officials need to approve the NTTA plan before it can be implemented because it involves work to a city street.
If it clears all bureaucratic hurdles, the project would cost $20,000 and wouldn't be complete until next year.
