Dallas' first H1N1 mass vaccination clinic days away
02:06 AM CST on Monday, November 2, 2009
DALLAS - With the first mass vaccination swine flu clinic in Dallas just days away, thousands of people are expected to line up for a shot.
Now, News 8 has learned Dallas County is considering giving those wanting to wait in line more time.
Those seeking vaccination in Tarrant County camped out outside the Wiley G. Thomas Coliseum in Haltom City. That is something Dallas County officials are hoping doesn't happen during the mass vaccination Wednesday.
"I really want to caution people not try to spend the night," said Zachary Thompson, Dallas Health Department. "That's not necessary. If they want to get here early that's fine."
Health officials are gearing up to hand out 10,000 doses of the vaccine, which will be enough, they say, to reach priority groups without medical insurance.
"We'll be walking down the line like we did last Friday to make sure everybody knows that this vaccine is for the priority groups," Thompson said.
The priority groups include pregnant women, people who live with or take care of children younger than six months of age, health care and emergency workers, people between six months and 24 years of age and those 25 through 64 years of age suffering from chronic health conditions. Dallas residents who don't meet the requirements will be turned away.
As for the general public, the waiting continues.
"The pharmacists who have not received their vaccine to this day that is the missing link," Thompson said. "Pharmacists are ready to go, but they have not received the vaccine."
The vaccine supply Wednesday is for Dallas residents only. Proof is required. The clinic will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dallas County Health & Human Services building at 2377 N. Stemmons Freeway in Dallas.
