Family of dead inmate wants answers from Dallas Commissioners
01:43 PM CST on Tuesday, November 3, 2009
DALLAS — The family of an inmate who died last month in the Dallas County Jail appeared before county commissioners on Tuesday looking for answers.
Bernardo Mario Pena was jailed for a parole violation when he died.
"I understand you guys have a job to do, but he is my brother; he was family; it hurts that he's gone," Susan Pena told commissioners. "Every day my mother wakes up, and it's agony. We just want answers."
Commissioners did not acknowledge the family when they attempted to address the panel last week. Commissioner John Wiley Price apologized to them on Tuesday.
The family told The Dallas Morning News that they plan to sue the sheriff's department for negligence and failure to provide safety to inmates.
