FORT WORTH — A woman and her three-year-old grandson perished when a smoky fire apprently suffocated them in their ranch-style home on the city's far southeast side Friday morning.
Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Lt. Kent Worley said the first firefighters arrived in the 6000 block of Truman Drive shortly before noon and saw no visible smoke... until they opened the front door.
The two victims were found together in the kitchen in front of a refrigerator. They were taken to local hospitals but could not be revived.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office identified them as Lavonda Anderson, 45, and Maurice Anderson, 3. They are the city's sixth and seventh fire fatalities of 2009.
Investigators found no evidence of a working smoke detector in the house.
Worley said the fire apparently started in a chair in the living room and used up all of the oxygen inside the 1,800 square foot home. The exact cause of the fire remained under investigation.
Damage to the building and property was estimated at $70,000.
