GARLAND — A group protested Saturday for the rights of cats and dogs at the Garland animal shelter.
Citizens for Reform of the Animal Shelter is opposed to the practice of using carbon monoxide gas to euthanize animals. They say Garland is the largest Texas city to use what they consider to be an outdated form of euthanasia.
Although the shelter says it is transitioning to lethal injections by the end of this year, CRASH wants all gassing to be halted immediately.
"We want the gas chambers — there are two of them — out of the Garland animal shelter, because it's a proven cruel and inhumane way to euthanize animals," said Dr. John Pippin, a spokesman for the group.
CRASH also collected a "wish list" of needed items for the shelter. It says it wants to support the staff and help improve the care of the animals.
