DALLAS — A toddler was killed after his older sister accidentally backed over him with a SUV Sunday at an Oak Cliff apartment complex in the 700 block of North Marsalis Avenue.

The 17 year old was leaving for a quick trip the grocery store when her 18-month-old brother, Fernando Corona, wandered out the door after her and behind the SUV.

"One of the other sisters ran out after the baby when she realized the baby had fallen," said Sgt. James Bristo, Dallas Police Department.

But, Bristo said it was too late and the teen backed the vehicle up, not realizing the toddler was behind the vehicle.

"I'm still kind of shaking," said Wanda Chagolla, a neighbor.

Chagolla called 911.

"The daddy was holding the baby's head and he just looked horrible," she said. "You just feel so horrible for the family because we're close and the baby was so sweet. I mean, he hadn't been walking that long."

Corona died at Methodist Dallas Medical Center at 3:25 p.m., which was about a half-hour after he was hit by the SUV.

Safety advocates say every week two children in the United States are killed in back-over accidents. Most of those children are younger than two and hit by large SUVs.

"I can't imagine the next few days, what it's going to be like," Chagolla said of the family's pain.

Police said they do not expect to file charges against the sister.
