Coke R. Stevenson, Texas governor from 1941 to 1947, is born in a log cabin in Mason County. Stevenson gained national attention in 1948 as a result of his heated U.S. Senate race against Lyndon Baines Johnson in which he lost by only 87 votes, the closest senatorial election in the nation’s history. |
